The name, London,
historically originates from Londonium, the Roman settlement on
the banks of the Thames which later became the walled City of
London.
The City as we now call it, was once a thriving port and
trading post until the Thames receded and the land was reclaimed
for building. It is still a centre for commerce today, though
these days it is bankers and stock brokers that walk the
streets, rather than sailors or merchants.
London
City even has its own mayor, the Lord Mayor of London and it's
own municipality and police force which all fall under what is
known as the Corporation of London. Londonium, or the City is said to be ruled (rather
aptly) by materialistic Capricorn which fits in very well with
the sign's natural preoccupation with status, wealth and
recognition. Capricorn is also a sign associated with
conservatism and tradition, and judging by all the recent sex
discrimination law suits brought about recently, it would seem
that the Old Boys Club is still refusing to die out!...
This
forms one of the twin cities (the other is Westminster) that
make up what is known as London today. The twin cities theme may
well be the reason that the well-known 17th century English
astrologer, William Lilly, associated London with the dual sign
of Gemini, and referred to a woodcut of twins burning at the
stake, which is supposed to be a thinly-disguised
symbol of
his prediction of the Fire of London.
Surrey,
another ‘stockbroker
belt’ is the labelled by some as the 'Connecticut' of London, from where wealthy
business tycoons commute into the City, just like New York. This
county is ruled by the
combined energies of Capricorn, Leo and Gemini.
(Acknowledgements to Peter Morrell for this information). This
is no doubt down to the fact that it is not only bankers that
live there but a cross-section of upwardly mobile types,
including celebrities (associated with Leo), media moguls
(Gemini) and businessmen (Capricorn).
Kent, another home
county associated with the mink and manure brigade, is full of
wealthy wine, olive and hops farmers, as well as retirees from
London who love to golf and have second homes in France (a Leo
country), and is said to be ruled by Leo with a Capricorn gloss.
