Lunar eclipse

The lunar eclipse on the 16th of August marks the start of a new nodal cycle - it is the first lunar eclipse in the Aquarius-Leo family of eclipses  - a result of the precession of the Moon's nodal axis through the zodiac.

Lunar eclipses highlight the feminine aspect and are therefore likely to involve women, mothers and revolve around lunar issues, such as birth, family, the home, diet & nourishment, instincts, knee-jerk responses and daily routine. Jung also associated the Moon with the Unconscious and all that psychic stuff that we bury or repress. Lunar eclipses may therefore be a time when these long-ignored aspects of our psyche bubble to the surface.

Date:     16 August 2008

Sign:      Aquarius

The emphasis now is on energy that is introspective and emotional in nature and concerns how we may wish to be of service to humanity, stand up and be counted for a cause, choose to be a member of a specific group, conduct friendships, liberate ourselves from the expectations of society, or take a step back from a fraught situation.

Aquarius is a fixed air sign and is associated with friendships, androgyny, humanitarianism, honesty, loyalty, originality and inventiveness, independence and intellectual genius. Negative Aquarius characteristics include: rebelliousness and perverseness - being different or controversial just for the sake of it, stubbornness and intractability, unpredictability and being too unemotional and detached.

Moon phase:      Full Moon

According to Dane Rudyar, this lunar phase symbolises endings, culmination points, fulfilment and crisis points. Full moons are often associated with a time of increased emotion too.

A time to let go emotionally...

During the lunar eclipse this August, you may find yourself wanting to start fresh on an inner level. This often means letting go of negative psychological habits, such as the need to constantly seek out emotional drama, and trying to gain a slightly more detached view of your current circumstances. This will help you see solutions to affairs of the heart more easily and help us to regain our inner equilibrium. At this time, you may also feel the need to say goodbye to those people in your life who are no longer making us feel good about ourselves or contributing to our emotional wellbeing.

In relationships, you may feel the need to assert your emotional independence or find a balance between your needs as an individual, and those of being in a partnership or a member of a group. Friendships at this time may be a source of pain or confusion - both Chiron and Neptune will be orbiting close to the Moon, exposing vulnerabilities or deceptions, and bringing to the surface feelings of  disenchantment  - someone close may let you down or hurt you and the air of disappointment may be palpable.

Try to see the bigger picture rather than just react from a ego point of view. Instead, see this as a chance to pay off a karmic debt, learn a valuable lesson about loyalty or simply let go of a group or friendship that has outlived its purpose. Neptune is the planet associated with dissolving things and may help to bring matters to a gentle (though decidedly ambiguous) close. However, Neptune is also indicative of boundary issues - it may mean that you need to draw clear lines of what is and is not acceptable behaviour within a friendship or group scenario and keep reinforcing these if you feel others are not respecting them.

A day later, Mars will square Pluto and things could really hot up. Try not to be obnoxiously wilful, overconfident or dictate to others what they should believe. By the same token, do not let others to manipulate or control you either, whether this be by nitpicking, criticising you or simply being a bully - neither course of action is particularly constructive and will only result in conflict. Instead, use this energy to try and effect personal transformation or make strategic plans for how you will assume personal control of a situation that appears to be spiralling into chaos. If needs be, you could also use the 17th to reiterate your stand on a particular boundary or privacy issue in a slightly more assertive manner, if people don't get the gentle hint on the previous day. Because of the lunar energy being so strong right now, you may find women to be more troublesome or difficult than men over the next few days...

This is the perfect moment to free yourself of society's expectations and allow yourself to be who you are. Don't feel you have to continue to hold in emotions that you think others will deem unacceptable or anti-social. Exposing your vulnerabilities now may actually open the channels for unexpected support and reassurance, acceptance and healing.
