Thematic overview

During the lunar eclipse on the 9th, the Moon will be in Leo, suggesting that the emotional spotlight will fall inward on your own needs, wants, habits and kneejerk reactions. The eclipse may be suggesting that there is a tension in your life right now between these, and the demands of your friends, colleagues or affiliates, or, indeed, society. In keeping with the symbolism of the lunar occultation, in which the light of the Moon is coloured or blotted out by the position of the earth in relation to the sun, this is probably not the time to be insular or selfish.

At this time, besides the Sun-Moon opposition that constitutes the eclipse, the Moon will only be making one other angle to another planet - a quincunx (150 degree aspect) to Uranus. This aspect, also known as an inconjunct, calls for emotional readjustment, possibly due to receiving a mild shock of some kind. A telling off by a friend or partner may be the wake-up call you need to make some changes to your attitude, or pull you from the funk of self involvement, back into the world. Alternatively, you may alter the way you view a particular person or set of circumstances after receiving new information that puts a different angle on things.

The eclipsed Sun is equally inactive, and mirrors the angles of the Moon.  Instead of making a quincunx to Uranus, it makes one to Saturn - the other half of the Saturn-Uranus opposition that has been so prominent in our skies recently. This angle calls for a readjustment of personal priorities and the need to reassess old structures in your life to see if they still provide healthy soil from which you can grow and prosper, or whether they have become fallow and outdated, holding you back or cramping your style. If changes or reform are required, make sure you attend to the details before acting - otherwise you may have to come back and fine tune again at a later stage, or possibly face criticism for not being thorough enough to check the fine print the first time round.

The Full Moon, which tends to bring matters to a head, may spark an inward realisation that you have become too fixated with self gain or become stuck within a framework of emotional habits that no longer serves you. The Moon also rules diet, so you may become aware of how you use food to comfort or punish yourself emotionally, and decide to make some changes or seek help. Within the home, this is a good time to make changes that facilitate more socialising or group activities, such as adding a barbecue area or building a conservatory where everyone can gather for some summer or winter sunshine and spend time in each other's company.

Lunar eclipse in Leo

Date:     9 February 2009

Sign:      Leo

The emphasis in energy is generally inwardly-focused and emotional in nature and concerns how we may wish to be of service to others, or choose to implement plans or blueprints, conduct rituals or plan schedules, look after small pets and take care of health matters.

Leo is a fixed fire sign and is associated with leadership, standing up for the weak, loyalty, self-expression, performance and the arts, wealth, self-confidence and bravery. Negative Leo characteristics include: arrogance, a taste for the melodramatic, childishness, pride, bossiness, dogmatism and excess.

Moon phase:      Full Moon

The moon is full, signalling endings, culmination points, fulfilment and crisis points. Full moons are often associated with a time of increased emotion too.
