Thematic Overview From an astrological perspective, the Sun, which is in opposition to the Moon, will be within orb of Venus, as the two planets move towards what is known as a superior conjunction in the sign of Capricorn on January the 11th at around 21h00 GMT. Superior conjunctions involve Venus being positioned 'above' the Sun, that is with the Sun sandwiched between it and the earth, rather than the other way around. Perhaps this is indicative of the triumph of charm over arrogance, or indeed, of feminine over masculine energies? It is worth noting that this configuration occurs in the almost zodiacal position and on the same day every four years as its predecessor.1 At this time, one is able to combine self-expression and diplomacy in a positive way, which bodes well for the world of politics. Worth noting is the fact that David Cameron, the Conservative Party leader, has his Sun and Ascendant in Libra2 (ruled by Venus.) This is also an excellent time for efforts aimed at self-improvement, such as sprucing up one's appearance, as well as positive self-promotion. Given the proximity of Venus to the Sun near the eclipse, it would seem as though relationships could form an important aspect of the themes highlighted by this eclipse, especially new ones that are forged during the course of the next six months. The Sun will be in the sign of Capricorn, which governs the more public aspect of one's life such as career, public image, social and familial obligations outside of the home, as well as social position, financial status and political clout. Venus also rules diplomacy, peace, love, reconciliation, art and beatification in all forms, including cosmetics, building facades, clothing, graphic design and jewellery, so such themes may also be emphasised now. Mercury and Pluto will also be hovering close to each other (they will be conjunct) and in the same astrological sign, which could add a transformative and educational element to any new career or public endeavours undertaken now, as well as added power to any public speeches delivered around this period. Not only will Mercury be making a square to Saturn at the time, but it will also be retrograde, only stationing the next day on the 16th, which suggests that any communication efforts within the sphere of diplomacy and personal relationships (Saturn is in Libra) such as an attempt at reconciliation, might need some tweaking before they are workable. Venus is also due to swap signs on the 18th, moving from stable and serious Capricorn into somewhat more unpredictable and independent Aquarius, which might also signal a possible change of heart or need for renegotiation. At the time of the eclipse, both the Sun and Moon will be making a positive, 60-degree aspect to Uranus in Pisces. This aspect adds a more utopian and humanitarian dimension to the Sun-Moon occultation, moving it firmly from the personal to the social realms. Perhaps some form of progress will be made with regard to peace efforts in war-torn areas, although this may require the resignation or removal of a certain male player from centre stage, symbolized by the Sun's blocked light. A woman (symbolised by the Moon) may now take his place, which could change the rules of engagement and help speed up proceedings. Uranus in Pisces also seems to be tied in with the responsible use of technology to improve people's health and the state of the environment, as well as the connection between science and religion. Could this mean developments related to the recent talks in Copenhagen? With four natal planets in Pisces3, including the Sun and Jupiter, perhaps this is an area where Gordon Brown might score a few points politically? Efforts in this sphere are further aided by the entry of big hitter, Jupiter into Pisces on the 18th. This is sure to amplify any good intentions attached to humanitarian efforts, as well as emphasise the global, ethical and spiritual dimensions of law, politics, religion, education and publishing. Annular Solar eclipse Date: 15 January 2010 Sign: Capricorn, ruled by Saturn The emphasis in energy is generally externally-focused, sometimes taking the form of situations and circumstances that present themselves to us and could revolve around themes such as public office, familial or official duties, the implementation of plans or blueprints, or the underlying structures in our lives. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign associated with duty, ambition, leadership, public life, hard work, persistence, self-betterment, fathers and fatherhood. Negative Capricorn characteristics include: harshness, stinginess, conservatism, workaholism and sternness. From the perspective of medical astrology and herbalism, Capricorn rules the knees, skin, bones and teeth, and is associated with herbs such as comfrey, knapweed, hemlock, henbane and hemp. Capricorn foods include starchy carbohydrates such as pasta and corn, potatoes and other root vegetables such as beets and onions. Flowers associated with this sign are: ivy, pansy, heartsease and amaranthus. Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, is the planet known as the Hard Taskmaster, who teaches us how to work hard, persist and bear the weight of the many duties or burdens we encounter in life. Saturn is also associated with wisdom gained from life-long experience, as well as the sage or mentor who can help to guide us through hardships and difficult times, and help us develop backbone and character. Saturn brings stability and control, but also obstacles and limitations. In alchemy, the metals most associated with Saturn is lead because of its weight and dullness. Moon phase: New Moon Because an eclipse happens between the sun and the moon, there will always be a moon phase involved! Solar eclipses always occur at New Moon because this is when both luminaries are on the same side of the earth. New Moons are linked to that start of a new cycle or a change in direction. This is time of new beginnings and fresh psychological perspectives, as well as births, introductions and novel ideas And now for a more breakdown of what the eclipse might mean for you sign by sign... Areas of life affected Below is a list of the likely areas of life highlighted or influenced at this time by the solar eclipse, classified according to sign. To get the most out of this table, you should look at the entry that is equivalent to your sun as well as your rising sign or Ascendant.
