Like any city, country, event or person, London
has a birth chart and with it, a particular personality. This may seem like a
far-fetched concept until we consider how easily we classify individuals
according to their cultural stereotypes, even within our own country – the
Scottish are fiery, the folk from Yorkshire tight-lipped and wadded, the Welsh
are soulful and love a good song, and the Southerners are friendly and flash.
Astrology has its own branch devoted to this area
known as mundane astrology, which works out the natal charts of places based on
historical events which are then used symbolically to represent a time and date
of ‘birth’. However, controversy often rages over which date and time is
considered the most historically accurate and relevant.
The United Kingdom, for example, has two working
charts commonly used by astrologers.
One is based on the coronation of William the
Conqueror at Westminster Abbey in 1066. This makes pioneering and war-like Aries
England’s ruler. The other chart uses 1801 as the key date because this is when
Britain officially became the United Kingdom. Here the UK is ruled by the polar
opposite sign - Libra. On the whole most astrologers try both and see which
they think works better – I prefer the 1801 chart myself.
Mundane astrology can give us an idea of the
unique character of a place or country – local or national characteristics,
possible areas of likely achievement, and how cosmological events might affect
it on a day to day basis. As with individual rites of passage, times of change,
upheaval, wars or disasters are often reflected in the chart by astrological
transits or planetary movements.
Just as we have relationships with our friends,
our boss, our partner or even our pets, so we all have a relationship with the
city (and country) that we live in. With regard to our own country, you only
have to look at how proudly patriotic people become when England wins a World
Cup sporting event or The Ashes for that matter! The same principle applies to
cities or towns.
Londoners can remember only too clearly how we
felt celebrating the win of the bid to host the next Olympic Games on the 6th
of July and the very next day, reeled from shock at the terrible events that
unfolded on our transport system. No Londoner could honestly say they were not
affected by what was happening in the city over that period.
On a more day to day level, I’m sure that when we
miss the last bus or Tube home, or have been gridlocked in traffic for hours, we
can sometimes feel as though the city is purposefully working against us! A lot
of people talk about their love-hate relationship with London and anyone who has
lived here for long enough knows what they mean…
With regards the planets, I will focus a lot on the ones that
affect people in groups. These are known as the social planets and include
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. These planets are often the best
indicators of collective change because they move so slowly and so have large
cycles which can coincide with the unfolding of historical events. They often
affect whole generations at once because most people of the same age group will
have the planet in the same sign. E.g. Pluto in Scorpio.
Using astrology, I will try to bring London alive and shed
light on your relationship with her.
