Traditional theories of London’s astrological ruler

William Lilly, Gemini and the Twin Cities of London...

William Lilly, a 17th century astrologer credited with predicting the Great Fire of London, wrote that London Town (or the City of Westminster) was ruled by Gemini. One has to remember that at one time London was made up of two cities - The City of London and Westminster (London Town) so the Twin metaphor is quite appropriate!

Gemini is the sign of communication (especially verbal and written), commerce and fast-paced living, all pretty characteristic of most big cities, including London. It may explain why most of the national press is based here  No doubt the garrulous quality of London’s ruler also helps in stimulating healthy debates in the House of Commons!

Gemini’s get bored easily, which may be why London has such a vibrant and ever-changing social scene and is so obsession with glamour and celebrity. It may also explain why London is known to be one of the fashion capitals of the world – Gemini’s adapt very easily to different trends and like to be up to date with the latest styles. The Geminian quality of the city is certainly epitomised in Samuel Johnson’s famous quote, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

London has for centuries been a gateway to the rest to the UK and Europe and this is reflected in it’s cosmopolitan population (Gemini rules travel and bridges). Gemini’s flexible/mutable quality is visible in the tolerance shown by its residents towards each other.

Mercury is the traditional ruler of Gemini.. Mercury, rules, among others things, transport of all kinds. You may want to take note of when Mercury retrogrades since this will have a profound effect on how well London’s transport systems operate. When Mercury retrogrades, or moves backwards, as it does a couple of times a year, it can cause delays on the Tube, traffic jams and flights and train cancellations.

It can also have an effect on communication of all kinds, causing misunderstandings, lost messages and computers to go on the blink.. On these days, allow extra time to get around  and be very clear and careful about what you say, read or sign, including legal contracts.
