What the Stars
have in Store for you this November ...
Happy Samhain! With the clocks now
having gone back, we have officially entered the season of
winter.
In the pagan calendar, Samhain is the
beginning of the Celtic year. The 'new year' festival
associated with this time from which we get Halloween,
celebrates the death of the summer god, Lugh, and the end of
the harvest. The month following this festival was called
'seed fall' in Celtic, symbolising the renewal of the
agricultural process.
According to the creators of
website,
newage.co.uk: "Samhain
heralds the beginning of Winter when the world starts to
darken and the days are getting shorter - the 'dark half' of
the year and the demise of the power of the sun."1
In astrology, the Sun's power begins to
wane from the moment of its entry into Libra - the sign of
its Fall, at the autumn equinox. The dark period, symbolised
by the Sun's travels through Scorpio, begin to lighten as
the Sun enters Sagittarius.
According to historians of ancient
astronomy, Sagittarius, as one of the three fire signs, a
division of the zodiac by element, was in natural harmony
with Leo, the sign ruled by the Sun. Thus, Jupiter and the
Sun were considered to be of the same triplicity. In
Chaldean or Babylonian astrology, the four winds were
associated with the triplicities, which divided the zodiac
into three by means of trine aspects of 120 degrees each. In
the case of the fire triplicity, Jupiter was the ruler of
this element and was associated with the north wind.2
Given that the trine is one of the most
harmonious angles in astrology and that the Sun is
considered to be 'friendly' with this triplicity, it makes
sense that when in this zodiac sign, it is considered
to be in its element. Traditionally in the modern calendar,
this is also the build-up to Christmas and therefore a
jovial (from Jove or Jupiter) period.
